How to add purpose to your Life.

Beginning a new year with a clean slate and with goals can often find us with newfound purposes and intentions in our life.  But so often the actual act of finding our purpose give ways to money and physical goals.

What is my purpose (? ) is often a question that we leave wide open hoping that the stars will align and the angels will sing and we will know where our life will go.  That does not happen often, if not at all.  It is much easier to look at a scale or the bank records and see visual goals to achieve.

The good news is that God has already set in motion your purpose.  He did it before you were born.  Yes, God has given you purpose, therefore there is no need to struggle anymore.

What does it mean to have a purpose?

A sense of purpose creates boundaries for your life and clarity for your day to day living. If you have don’t have a purpose in your life then you end up being swayed daily by the whims of others and the problems of life.

Having clarity in what you want to accomplish also helps you feel more gratified in your day-to-day living. The struggle is real when you don’t have any idea where you are going or what you want to accomplish.

The Bible tells us in Ephesians that we are not to be children tossed to and fro by the trickery of the world. God has designed us to be purposeful people.

How do I know what God’s Purpose is in my life?

It becomes difficult to comingle God’s purpose with selfish purposes of the world. Not because God makes it difficult, but because we often cannot see that worldly goals do not always align with God’s goals

We then struggle for some kind of alignment between the two and how are they going to intersect.  The problem is that they should not intersect but should always run parallel to each other.  Just jumping into the word can become disheartening when we are struggling with goals and understanding the “what should I do with my life” question.
So let’s start with some basic scriptures that help us understand God’s purpose in our lives and how he wants us to live it with an intention for him.

How do I know what God wants for me?

God created us for good works. That means God wants us to do good things. We were designed for this exclusively for the glory of  God. He created a plan for us before we were able to walk or stand on our own.

Our purpose comes from God and no one else.  The struggle that we have internally is not from God!

Everything,  everything, everything that you do should be for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 tells us that everything we do eating or drinking or whatever it is always for the Glory of God.

When we put God first in everything that we do then our goals and our direction in life become clearer. God does not want us flaying around without direction.  He has set our path straight according to the book of Proverbs, therefore we must walk it every day. When we walk a straight path it can be life changing.

What does Scripture say about changing my life?

If anyone has set goals you know that making big changes can be a disappointment when and if you fail.  Diets and workouts the top goals of the new year and come February all is but lost for most.  So how can scripture change my life?  The words that God has given us through scripture is to help us in every situation, every day of our lives.  It becomes a purpose-driven life when we allow scripture to mold us in ways that make us stronger physically and mentally and of course spiritually.
What does that look like for the person that is looking to make big changes in his or her life?  Simple words from God daily can change our course in life and our eternal life.
In the New Testament, in the book of Mark, Jesus is questioned as to the most important commandment and he answers with this statement

Hear O Israel,  the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength…

Mark 12:29-30 NASB

This scripture can be life-changing.  Loving God first and foremost, through Jesus Christ with everything you have creates intention and purpose. That in turn can help you reach your goals.

Can the  Bible help me with my goals?

If you are looking for a book on goals, the Bible should be your first and foremost book to read daily.  How can a book that doesn’t talk about goals help me reach my goals?

The definition of a goal simply put is the intention in a direction of purpose and desire.

God gives us direction… the Proverbs in the Old Testament tell us that he directs our steps.  How great is it to know that the God we serve helps us walk daily through life?  The saying” Let Go and Let God” is so very true.  He gave us the Holy Spirit that can guide us through the best of times and through the worst of times.  Jesus had to die and go away so that we could have the Holy Spirit to help guide us.

Do I have to have lots of faith?

Faith does not have to be big.  It starts a small as a mustard seed but once it is planted the tiniest of seeds grows into a huge bush.    Planting that small seed of faith can start you onto a path of purpose in your life.  The Bible tells us that the growth system comes first by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.

Listening to the word can help you grow your faith, watering it daily to fulfill his purpose in you.

Does God know my destiny?

God has fulfilled all of our destinies. He knows that what happens to us if we obey his word and he knows what happens if we disobey his word. He is pretty clear throughout scripture. His purpose for sending Christ on this earth to die for our sins so that we can have eternal life is the fulfillment of our destiny.

Don’t worry if you fail him along the way. We serve a God of compassion and repentance is just a prayer away.

You can choose a purposeful life, where the promise is not of pain-free living but of clarity and integrity. God wants to fulfill your destiny. You just have to choose Christ, it really is just that simple.

I pray that you can go forward with a passion for fulfilling life serving a mighty God, that is slow to anger and delights in his loving servants. He has wonderful things in store for all of us eternally.

Because he first loved me.
